How This Newton Home Remodeling Project Transformed a House

While many of our remodeling projects focus on custom kitchens and spa-like bathrooms, Bay State Remodeling also has the expertise and resources needed for whole-home remodeling projects. So today, we’re spotlighting a recent whole-home remodeling project in nearby Newton.

    Newton Whole-House Remodel Project Details

The goal of this whole-home remodeling project was to integrate modern elements into the traditional design of this charming 5,078-square-foot home in Newton, MA. The primary goal was to create an open-concept main floor design better suited to entertaining family and friends.

The transitional design incorporates a new spacious wrap-around porch with gas connections and a rustic stone finish, perfect for outdoor entertaining in the spring and summer.

The upper floors feature a luxurious primary bedroom suite, additional bedrooms with ensuite baths, and versatile living spaces perfect for either guests or extra family members.

The lower level, a daylight basement, includes a work-from-home office with a private walk-out, complemented by a family room and kitchenette.

Why Transitional Design is Perfect for Your Home Remodel

Transitional design typically blends modern elements with an existing traditional design to make formal spaces more casual and inviting.  However, transitional design is not limited to the home’s interior. Here are some exterior changes made to update this Newton home’s curb appeal.

    • Removed the dated window shutters
    • Changed the porch columns from round to square
    • Replaced the windows and trim
    • Updated and streamlined the gutters and downspouts
    • Trim back the landscaping to expose the stone foundation walls
    • Changed the dated lap siding to shake shingles

Tips for Creating an Open Space Concept in Your Home

The first step in an open-concept design is determining the type and location of your family home’s structural elements. The biggest challenge to creating an open-space concept typically involves the home’s existing beams and columns. As a result, completely removing a load-bearing wall might be cost-prohibitive. However, creating or expanding a framed opening between adjoining rooms provides a similar result without the high cost of structural changes.

Tips for Designing Versatile Living Spaces for Family and Guests

A versatile living space means a room or area can serve multiple purposes as family needs change over time. The challenge is to identify what the family needs today and well into the future.

    • A combined mud room/laundry room location that also features a dog wash station.
    • Crafting room cabinets that hide a pullout bed when not in use.
    • A den or office that handles business by day and becomes the TV room after dinner.
    • Dining room banquets provide easily accessible but hidden storage for bulky or seasonal items.

A uniform flooring element, such as hardwood floors or Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT), can further increase room versatility while adding charm and texture to any home style. Throughout this Newton home, the new hardwood floors add warmth and durability, enhancing this stunning whole-home transformation’s overall aesthetic and functionality.

Benefits of a Luxurious Primary Bedroom Suite in Home Remodeling

After the whole home remodel, these homeowners have a calm and tranquil space perfect for decompressing from or preparing for another busy day of work and family life. The bedroom features a huge walk-in closet, a sitting area for reading, and plenty of room for meditation or yoga.

Why a Private Walk-Out Office is a Must-Have in Home Renovations

It’s no secret that many people now work from home whenever possible to avoid the chores of commuting to work each day. As a result, a home office is a must-have for many potential homebuyers looking to improve their work-life balance. This home office, which can also be used as a guest bedroom, features a private walk-out to the backyard for added convenience and versatility.

How a Wrap-Around Porch Enhances Outdoor Entertaining

No one wants to cook, dine, or entertain on a rickety old patio deck, including these Newton homeowners. This whole-home remodel included a new wrap-around porch and stone finish deck to extend their entertaining space outside during the spring and summer months. Seafood boil, anyone?

How Ensuite Baths Add Value to Your Home

An ensuite bathroom is typically associated with the home’s primary bedroom, but why stop there? The term ensuite means a bathroom can only be accessed through a bedroom. Besides improving daily life through increased privacy, ensuites provide an excellent return on investment (ROI) by increasing the home’s resale value.

While a whole-house remodel isn’t the best option for every homeowner, it was the best for this Newton family. By remodeling the new family home before moving in, they have avoided the pitfalls of remodeling one room at a time.

    • Redundant plan and permit costs
    • Living in an active construction zone
    • Seasonal weather delays
    • Higher material and labor costs

If you’re considering a whole-house remodeling project to improve the functionality, versatility, or design of your family home, you can trust Bay State Remodeling to create a stunning open-concept design that exceeds your expectations.
