Maximizing Functionality for a Newton, MA Home with Basement and Attic Renovations

This project demonstrates how homeowners can transform unused basement and attic spaces to add living space and functionality to any family home. In the attic, we remodeled the unfinished portion to create a large and luxurious primary bathroom, a massive walk-in closet, a new mechanical closet, and a secondary laundry room for added convenience. We also remodeled the finished attic space to create a new, spacious living room. Lastly, two small existing closets were removed to provide seamless access to an elegant yet comfortable outdoor living space.

This Newton, MA, renovation transformed both the attic and other living spaces to maximize functionality and style. See the full details of the attic remodel here and the additional space upgrades here.

Design Blueprints for Attic and Basement Transformation

    Newton Attic Remodel Plan

The basement remodel work included adding two new mechanical rooms and two private yet functional new areas to the unfinished section of the basement: a cozy guest bedroom and a new music room. In the previously finished basement area, we added a stylish office using a modern glass wall and door with sleek back trim.

    Newton Basement Remodel Plan

In addition to remodeling the attic and basement, we removed the entry closet to create a more inviting and spacious feel at the main entrance. Once the construction work was complete, the entire house was painted to the client’s specifications using a vibrant color palette.

    Attic Remodel Details and Photos

Much of the attic space of this Newton, MA, home was previously finished with white walls and hardwood flooring. However, the entire space had no distinct purpose or style.

    After the attic bedroom remodel.

For the attic bedroom, we started by removing two small existing closets on each side of the exterior door leading to the deck. With the closets gone, we added two new windows to increase the available natural light.

The new bathroom remodel took up most of the existing mechanical room. It now features a separate toilet room, a new double vanity, and a luxurious shower with a bold serpentine tile pattern.

Here, you can see the plumbing lines for the new shower.

Notice how the mixing valves are securely mounted to plywood backing between the studs, and the water lines are secured to the wall studs every 12”? Properly anchored water lines eliminate the clunking noises heard as the water is turned on and off.

This photo shows the wall of the new toilet room and the relocated toilet sewer connection. The toilet was moved into the room to increase the ceiling height.
These photos show the before and after of the new walk-in closet and laundry room.

    Basement Remodel Details and Photos

While some of the basement areas were already finished, we used this unfinished space to create two new rooms.

    Before the basement remodel
The finished basement guestroom is large enough for a queen or king bed.
The new insulated music room provides a place to listen to or play music without disturbing others.
We also created a new office space in the finished basement. The glass wall runs floor to ceiling for privacy, and the black trim nicely contrasts the blue palette.

This project uniquely combined two of our most popular services, attic and basement remodels, into one. While this option might not work for everyone’s budget or timeline, this Newton, MA, family wanted to complete all the construction so they could begin enjoying their dream home as soon as possible.

If you’ve been thinking about an attic or basement for your family home, here are some key points to consider as you plan your project.

How Do I Transform My Attic into a Functional Living Space?

The first step is determining if your attic space is a good candidate for an attic conversion. This involves checking structural elements and verifying the finished ceiling heights.

Next is determining how much usable space can be gained with an attic conversion project. The roof’s slope can dramatically impact the amount of square footage that can be added. If a staircase must be added, that will lower the available square footage by another 63 square feet (7’ x 9’).

From there, it’s time to decide what to do with the space. Do you need more bedrooms, or would an office or craft room make more sense?

What about a bathroom or kitchenette for more flexibility and convenience?

It’s important to note that your attic remodel (or basement remodel) costs are affected by a variety of factors, including:

    • The age and condition of your home
    • Removing or adding walls
    • Relocating plumbing, electrical, and HVAC services
    • The finishes you select
    • Structural elements and their locations
    • New plumbing and electrical fixtures

Consider working with a design-build contractor like Bay State Remodeling to ensure the success of your attic conversion or basement remodel. Unlike other contractors, we use our in-house designers and architects to prepare your project plans, reducing costs and project timelines.

Our 15 years of local service have resulted in hundreds of satisfied customer testimonials, and our attention to detail and customer service have won us numerous awards and accolades from Angi and the Better Business Bureau.
