How a Whole House Remodel Enhanced Daily Living for Newton, MA Family

Today, we share a recently completed whole-house remodeling project in Windermere Rd., Newton, MA.  The goal was to reconfigure the outdated floor plan to accommodate a busy family life and entertaining schedule while maintaining the classic charm of a brick Ranch Style design.

Lower and main floor plans for Newton, MA, whole-house remodel

The result is a stunning 5-bedroom, 3 ½-bath home with a dedicated downstairs laundry and exercise area and an upper level featuring an open-concept living and dining room. To fully appreciate the transformation a whole-house remodel can provide, let’s take a closer look at the work done in each section of the home.

    Kitchen and Dining Room Remodel

It’s no secret that the kitchen is the heart of the home, where family and friends tend to gather. Unfortunately, the existing kitchen was anything but warm, welcoming, and comfortable.

In addition to removing the existing wall between the kitchen and dining room, the new kitchen layout features.

    • White Luna-style cabinetry from Fabuwood for a clean, simple, and timeless design element.
    • 1 ¼” thick Calacatta Cressida Quartz countertops for the durability every busy kitchen needs.
    • A porcelain backsplash adds contrast, texture, and interest to the new design.
    • Bosch stainless steel appliances provide a sleek and modern touch to the space.
    • A spacious peninsula provides casual seating while providing additional meal prep space.
    • Light hardwood floor finish adds a touch of warmth and cohesion to the finished project.

    Bathroom Remodels

Like the rest of this Newton, MA, home, all three bathrooms featured outdated finishes and fixtures.

The goal was to turn these areas into sanctuaries of comfort and style with the following design elements.

    • Sleek Luna-style vanities in Cloud White, Stone, Dove, and Pistachio colors add style and much-needed storage options to a small space.
    • Ceramic tiles that incorporate classic designs with a modern color pallet.
    • New layouts to maximize space and comfort and natural light distribution.
    • Grohe and Kohler chrome plumbing fixtures add simple elegance with their classic bright finish.
    • Pure white quartz countertops
    • A new half-bath on the main floor was added for guest and visitor convenience, featuring Phillip Jeffries textured wallpaper.

    Lower-Level Remodel

The entire lower level of this family home was remodeled to create spaces for relaxation and productivity. In addition to two new bedrooms for friends and family who visit regularly, the space now includes a cozy family room and fireplace perfect for entertaining or relaxing.

A roomy new workout area has eliminated the need for a gym membership. This exercise space has enough room for yoga mats, weights for strength training, or a low-impact elliptical or treadmill to help family members stay fit without leaving home.

A spacious laundry room with a new sink makes laundry chores a breeze, while the footprint allows enough space for a folding table, ironing board, or clothes steamer. The wall opposite the washer and dryer is an ideal space for shelving to keep holiday decorations out of the garage and close at hand.

This whole-house remodel included updates to the exterior finishes, which included –

Painting the gutters, garage door, and exterior door and window trim black adds some interest and contrast.

Covering the exposed concrete foundation walls with a light gray stucco finish adds warmth while boosting curb appeal.

Lastly, the home now has a new central air conditioning system to make northeast summers more comfortable and enjoyable.

The Benefits of Open-Concept Floor Plans for Brick Ranch Homes

Due to their traditional low roof lines, Brick Ranch homes are ideal candidates for open floor plans. Removing a wall between two rooms immediately improves any space’s function, usability, and light distribution. The biggest challenge to creating an open-space concept typically involves the home’s existing beams and columns. If the structure doesn’t allow for the complete removal of a wall, consider making a large, framed opening to provide similar results.

Why Quartz Countertops Are a Durable and Fashionable Option for Your Kitchen

While granite and marble remain popular with homeowners, it’s tough to beat the durability and cost-savings that quartz countertops can provide. Both granite and marble are porous, expensive, and require regular maintenance and sealing. With less expensive quartz, the binder used with the quartz chips creates a solid surface (non-porous) that’s much easier to clean, resists most stains, and can handle the heat from pots and pans. Since quartz is manufactured, you can find a color scheme or pattern to match virtually any home décor.

Why Professional Remodeling Services Are Essential for Whole-House Remodels

By remodeling this Newton family home before moving in, the family has avoided the pitfalls of remodeling one room or space at a time.

    • Redundant plan and permit costs
    • Living in an active construction zone
    • Seasonal weather delays
    • Higher material and labor costs

As the name implies, a whole-house remodel typically involves all the major residential systems found in the home. Consequently, you don’t want to trust your home to an unlicensed or inexperienced residential contractor.

Instead, consider working with a design-build contractor like Bay State Remodeling to reduce construction costs and timelines. Our in-house design team can quickly prepare your original project drawings and handle unforeseen changes that might arise. With over 15 years of residential remodeling experience, we have provided exceptional design-build and construction management services to help hundreds of your neighbors with their whole-house remodeling needs.
