Today’s featured bathroom project in Brookline, MA differs slightly from our other project blog posts. For this Brookline family, all three bathrooms (primary, secondary, and half-bath) lacked a cohesive design and adequate storage for a busy family. See how this transformation took place in our detailed project story here.

The primary bathroom was updated with modern finishes to create a luxurious spa-like atmosphere. The new design includes a sleek glass shower with a barn door, light-toned tiles, and high-end finishes to create a serene and elegant sanctuary. New storage options dramatically improve the bathroom’s functionality, while the color pallet creates a bright and calming space, perfect for relaxing after a tough day at work.

For the secondary bathroom, a neutral color scheme with playful design elements creates a kid-friendly design that can be easily updated as the children grow. With durability and practicality in mind, we opted for intelligent storage solutions and durable materials that will stand up to the rigors of daily use while providing a clean and welcoming appearance for guests and visiting family members.

The work in the half-bath included new paint and replacing the pedestal sink with a new vanity to increase storage.
To reduce the remodeling costs for this Brookline family, we reused the existing sink, tub, and toilet locations, as shown in the project plans below.

We demolished the existing finishes for the primary and kids’ bathrooms down to the wall framing and subfloor. This allows us to inspect the existing utility connections (water, drain, waste, and electrical) and easily make any needed modifications or repairs.
The next step was installing the new shower pan with waterproof cement backer board in the primary bath and a new tub/shower combo unit for the kids’ bathroom. We also installed the cement board over the subfloor to provide a level surface for the new floor tiles.

From there, both spaces received new drywall, vanities, sinks, plumbing fixtures, and barn door assemblies for the new tub and shower.

If you’re considering remodeling your family home’s bathroom, here are the most frequently asked questions to help you choose the best finishes and options.
Does Hiring an Experienced Bathroom Remodeling Contractor Make a Difference?
By working with an experienced bathroom remodeling contractor, you benefit from their years of local experience concerning building codes, quality workmanship, and material suppliers. This expertise ensures your bathroom remodel is completed on time and within budget.
With over 15 years of successful remodeling projects, Bay State Remodeling’s attention to detail has earned it numerous awards and accolades from industry leaders, including Houzz, Angi, Yelp, and the Better Business Bureau. While we greatly appreciate the awards, our customer testimonials matter the most to us.
How to Achieve a Spa-Like Atmosphere for Your Bathroom Remodel
The first step is to make a list of what is or isn’t working in your current bathroom, such as:
- Storage – Do you have enough room for towels and other bathroom necessities? Features like shower/tub niches, medicine cabinets, open shelving, and even custom cabinetry can dramatically increase storage options in a small space.
- Finishes – Upgraded finishes like marble, porcelain, and quartz countertops add style and durability to any bathroom renovation project. If these materials are beyond your budget, countless ceramic tile options can mimic your desired look without breaking the budget. While chrome is the default finish for most faucets, options like bronze, black, or nickel can add additional contrast and interest to any bathroom upgrade project.
- Must-Have Features – Now it’s time to decide what additional upgrades your existing bathroom space needs to meet your family’s needs –
- Steam shower
- Radiant floor heating
- Towel warmers
- Jacuzzi/soaker tub
- Shower bench
- Separate makeup vanity
- Skylight
- Rain shower
- Double shower
- Open shower
- Floor-to-ceiling tiles
- Bidet
- Undermount bathtubs
- Mood or task lighting
- Luxury materials and finishes
- Secondary water heater
Once you’ve assembled your must-have list, present it to the contractor to determine pricing and construction timeline.
How to Ensure a Painless and Stress-Free Bathroom Remodeling Experience
The first step is to contact a reputable, appropriately licensed contractor to perform the work needed for your new bathroom. By working with a design-build contractor like Bay State Remodeling, you can eliminate the need to hire an architect.
To maximize the ROI of your bathroom remodel, it’s imperative that you don’t overspend trying to add every bell and whistle available. Here are the most popular bathroom updates potential homebuyers look for when shopping for a home.
- Shower or Bathtub? Many buyers prefer a larger shower for the ensuite and a shower/tub combo for the additional bathrooms with growing children. Of course, some adults like a soaker tub, whirlpool bathtub, or steam shower, so consider all options during the design stage.
- Improve bathroom ventilation with a direct-vent exhaust fan (rated at 110 CFM—Cubic Feet per Minute). This fan removes excess humidity and steam, keeping moisture, mildew, and mold from establishing a foothold.
- Double vanities are essential for a bathroom shared by two or more people. They provide additional storage and enough room for two people to prepare for work or a night out.
- Adjustable lighting adds versatility to any bathroom space. While bright lights are great for getting ready in the morning, softer lights create a relaxing atmosphere when winding down from a long day.
- Flooring options include ceramic tile, natural stone, or LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tiles) to help minimize slips and falls. Coordinated wall tiles can provide contrast while adding texture and color to a small space.
